In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable energy solutions, the HydrOTEC Project has officially commenced its mission to harness hydrogen production through the innovative use of Solar Assisted Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) in the Mediterranean Sea. The project, which kicked off on December 1, 2023, is slated to run for a duration of 36 months, with a projected completion date in 2026.
The collaborative effort involves five distinguished project partners hailing from three countries—Cyprus, Greece, and Spain. The Cyprus University of Technology, the M.M. Makronisos Marina Ltd (Ayia Napa Marina), and Lumoscribe Ltd represent Cyprus, the International Hellenic University joins from Greece, and Enerbasque contributes from Spain.
Heading the initiative is the Cyprus University of Technology, with Professor Toula Onoufriou serving as the Project Coordinator. The Technical Coordinator, Professor Constantine Michailides, and Scientific Coordinator, Professor Paul Christodoulides, bring their expertise to steer the project towards success.
The HydrOTEC Project aims to explore the potential of Solar Assisted OTEC technology as a means to produce hydrogen, a clean and sustainable energy carrier. By tapping into the vast energy resources of the Mediterranean Sea, the project endeavors to develop an environmentally friendly method for hydrogen generation.
